can i ask you a personal question? WHAT was your favorite cereal as a kid?
mine was fruity pebbles. always fruity pebbles. (unless those frosted cheerios were on the table). we used to have to fight for the fruity pebbles around my house because my dad would take the biggest bowl he could find and make a GIANT bowl of cereal for himself on the weekends.
a few weeks ago i had an amazing moment. i was walking down the streets of the upper east side and randomly got SWARMED with the smell of fruity pebbles. AH. MAZING.
the only downside? i couldn’t get them out of my brain. it was like all i wanted in the world. i have no words.
sooooo. i decided to experiment. and that meansssssss boozy milkshakes!
when i was younger i’m pretty sure milkshakes were the ONLY way i got calcium. i used to make them with an immersion blender that we kept in the retractable bread box. it means i had to pull literally EVERYTHING out of the box to even find it, because a whole bunch of crap was stuck in there too. so basically i had to be REALLY devoted. (which i generally was when it came to milkshakes).
my favorite flavor? COFFEE. i loveeeeeed coffee milkshakes.
that was obviously before i had a boozy milkshake… which just changed my world.
sooo. we’re gonna start this off by making what i’ve deemed “cereal milk”
basically we’re just putting some cereal in the the milk and letting it soak for a while. it’s THIS step that makes this recipe a little bit intense. it’s not an “on a whim” recipe. for it to really be great, you’ve got to plan… like at least 20 minutes ahead (but preferably 2 hours).
i stand by the claim that THIS step is what makes these milkshakes. if you absolutely can’t do it in advance, i’d just throw the full cup and half of dry cereal into the milkshake when you’re blending it up.
but really CEREAL MILK is my jam. it’s the bees knees. and you just NEEDDDDD it.
after the cereal soaks for a while, we just stream the milk through a sieve to get the mushy cereal out and then its good to go!
we blend it up with some cake vodka (or you could use whipped cream vodka if you’re out of cake 😉) & french vanilla ice cream (because french vanilla is way creamier than like vanilla bean. ew.) and some more cereal!
and that’s it!
I used some whipped cream on top of mine and sprinkled some extra fruity pebbles on top and stuck some along the glasses with a little honey.
they just look SO pretty.
they’re super indulgent, so i can’t slurp these down like a vodka soda.
and i loveeee them for a special occasion. I first came up with them for frankie’s birthday and he LOVED them. it’s like a special treat!
so let’s celebrate the start of summer! with a cold boozy milkshake!
because it’s going to be colorful and fun and amazing… just like these milkshakes!
- 1 cup milk
- 1 + ½ cup fruity pebbles, divided
- 2 cups french vanilla ice cream
- ½ cup cake vodka
- whipped cream + fruity pebbles, for topping
- In a large cup, combine the milk and ¾ cup fruity pebbles. Set it aside in the refrigerator for at least twenty minutes, or up to two hours, to let the milk take on the flavor of the cereal.
- Remove the milk and strain it through a mesh sieve or a cheese cloth.
- In a blender, combine the ice cream, remaining ¾ cup fruity pebbles, and vodka. Blend and divide into two glasses.
- Top with whipped cream and a few fruity pebbles if desired.
